If you’re reading this, you probably already know us or you’re about to pick up one of our cars. I’ve been in the car rental business in Malaga since 1992, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned in these 30-plus years, it’s that Puerto Marina is the kind of place you never tire of recommending.

It’s not your typical concrete-filled marina. It’s something else entirely. Here’s what you absolutely can’t miss and how to get around without ruining your vacation.

Why visit Puerto Marina? The most original port in the world

Look, I’ve seen many ports, but Benalmádena is unique. It’s not for nothing that it’s won the award for Best Port in the World a couple of times.

What makes it special is its “Gaudí-esque” or Arab-modern architecture—call it what you will—but those artificial islands with apartments that look like sandcastles are a sight to behold. Strolling there at sunset, with the buildings reflected in the canals, is one of those things that makes the trip worthwhile. It’s a place with soul, period.

What to see in Puerto Marina: My must-sees

A stroll through the islands and their bridges

First things first: get lost. Cross the bridges that connect the islands. You’ll see the boats docked right at people’s doorsteps. It’s the quietest and most authentic part of the port.

Sea Life Benalmádena

If you’re traveling with kids, Sea Life is a sure bet. It’s right at the entrance to the port. It’s not one of those giant aquariums where you spend three hours; it’s cozy, and children love seeing the sharks and rays up close.

Varadero and the luxury “toys”

If you like boats (I love them), head to the boatyard area. That’s where the real action is: breathtaking yachts and sailors hard at work. It’s the perfect contrast between luxury and traditional craftsmanship.

What to do: Don’t stay alone on the dock

Go out to see dolphins

There are several boats that leave daily. If you’re lucky (and in Benalmádena we usually are), seeing dolphins jumping alongside the boat is an unforgettable experience. It’s one of the excursions I always suggest to clients who ask me about it at the office.

Give it some gas: Nautical activities

If you’re the type who can’t sit still in a hammock, rent a jet ski or go parasailing . Seeing the Sierra de Mijas mountains from the air while flying over the sea is amazing.

Shopping and souvenirs

There are plenty of shops in the port’s shopping center. Don’t just expect the usual postcards; there are nautical clothing and craft shops that are great if you want to buy something other than the typical fridge magnet.

Eating at the Port: Where do I go?

There’s everything here, but be careful:

  • For fish: Look for seafood restaurants that have the freshest catch of the day. A plate of fried fish in front of the boats is a real treat.
  • Something different: There are some very good international restaurants (Italian, Asian).
  • An afternoon drink: If you’re looking for a lively atmosphere, places like Kaleido are a classic. You sit there, enjoy the sea breeze, and watch life go by. There’s no better plan.

How to get there and the parking “headache”

Come with your Albacars car

Getting here is a breeze. If you’re coming from our airport office, it’s just a 15-minute drive on the motorway or the main road. You can’t miss it; everything is signposted towards “Benalmádena Costa / Puerto Marina”.

The Parking Issue (My Friendly Advice)

Parking on the street in summer is mission impossible, let’s not kid ourselves.

  1. Port Parking: It’s the most expensive but the most convenient. You enter, leave your car in the shade, and walk straight to the boats.
  2. Blue Zone: There are parking spaces around the port, but they’re going fast.
  3. Stop by our office: Our Albacars Benalmádena office is located right on Avenida Alay, at the entrance to the port. If you have any questions about the car or need a specific restaurant recommendation, just come in and ask for us. That’s what we’re here for!

At Albacars, we won’t overwhelm you with unnecessary insurance or strange fuel charges. We want you to enjoy the Port of Benalmádena and, when you return the car, thank us for recommending it.
